Every one of us has to deal with leg hair in some way, because the reality is whether you’re a man or a woman, we all have it (and then some). Of course, it’s most common to see women with smooth shaved legs, but what about men?
I find men shaving their legs is becoming more popular these days but the reason really depends on your situation. Some people have patchy leg hair and would rather not have it at all or they simply have too much and want to dial it down. Men commonly shave their legs for many different sports as well.
The best way to trim leg hair for guys in either of those situations really comes down to some of the most common ways we see it done.
3 Common Ways to Trim Your Leg Hair
1. Using a hair trimmer
This is the go-to way for most guys that want to trim their leg hair. In fact, it is for trimming almost any area of hair on the body.
As I’ve said in previous hair trimming articles, getting yourself a trimmer or clipper is one of the best things you can do if you’re a hairy person that needs to groom regularly. They come with tons of attachments that let you trim to any length you want.
So, to use one on your legs, you’ll want to have an idea of how short you want your hair, use the appropriate guard and start trimming where needed. My advice is to always start at a higher guard and work your way down until you’re happy with the length. Of course, not applying a guard is the lowest you can go short of actually having to shave your legs.
Make sure to watch for the direction your hair is going and go against it so you get all areas (you don’t want to have longer patches than others).
If you’re not using a guard, you can trim in the direction of the hair instead of against it if you want to keep some of the length.
Once you’re satisfied, brush the trimmed hair off and double check that you’ve gone over everything evenly. Get a better visual in the video below.
2. Shave with a razor
There are many benefits to shaving your legs and if you’re a fan of having no hair at all and want to get rid of your leg hair altogether, then shaving with a razor is the way to go!
This method is pretty straightforward and is a more efficient way of getting a smooth shave over doing something like waxing.
If you have a lot of hair on your legs I would recommend running a trimmer over them first to minimize the amount of hair you have to shave off. It just makes things less messy and will end up making the shaving process much easier because there won’t be a lot of thick hair clogging up the razor.
Now for the shaving. This is best done in the shower as the water will make the hairs soft and easier to shave and it makes for easy clean-up as well. You’ll want to lather up with some shaving cream so your skin is well lubricated and you get a smooth shave.
Again, go against the grain of the hair to get the smoothest shave possible. Run the razor in straight lines and be careful to avoid getting any cuts!
Pro tip: who can you ask for some leg shaving help? You guessed it – a woman! If you have a better half in your life, get them to help you out. They know how to do it better than anyone.
If you don’t have anyone to ask, you can get some tips in the video below.
3. Waxing
If you don’t want to have to worry about your hair growing back for as long as you can, then waxing might be the option for you.
This method is a lot more time consuming as it does require some prepping beforehand and it is also more expensive whether you’re doing on your own or having it done by a professional.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how to wax your legs on your own:
- The hair should be at least 1/4 – 1/2 inch long in order for the wax to catch all of the hair
- Apply some baby powder before waxing to get rid of any moisture on the skin
- Apply wax in the direction of the hair and pull in the opposite direction
Remember to pull quick like a band-aid. It will cause more pain than it’s worth if you don’t.
A final word
In my opinion, the best way to trim your leg hair is to just stick with using a trimmer. Most of the time we don’t need to have buttery smooth legs.
If you just don’t like hair or participate in a sport that requires you to not have leg hair, go for the razor as it’s inexpensive and easy to use.
